Breast cancer is a significant global health concern. As per the World Health Organization, it caused 685,000 deaths worldwide in 2020. It accounts for 12.5% of all new annual cancer cases globally, making it the most common cancer in the world. Breast cancer is most common in middle-aged and older women, with a median age of 62 years old. Because of the prevalence of the disease and the amount of deaths worldwide, screening for breast cancer can be vital in fighting the disease.
Early detection of breast cancer significantly increases the chances of successful treatment and survival. The 5-year relative survival rate in the U.S. for all types and stages of breast cancer combined is 91%, highlighting the importance of regular screening.
The most common method of breast cancer screening is mammography. This X-ray exam can detect tumors that cannot be felt and can also find microcalcifications, tiny deposits of calcium that sometimes indicate the presence of breast cancer.
Another method is a clinical breast exam, where a healthcare professional checks for lumps or other physical changes. Additionally, individuals are encouraged to perform regular self-examinations at home to familiarize themselves with their breasts and easily notice any changes.
Genetic testing may also be recommended for those with a strong family history of breast cancer. This test checks for specific inherited changes (mutations) in a person's chromosomes, genes, or proteins that may increase the risk of developing cancer.
Given the prevalence of breast cancer, regular screenings are critical. They offer us a powerful tool in the fight against cancer, allowing for early detection and significantly improving our chances of successful treatment. Each person's situation is unique, so always discuss with your healthcare provider to understand which screenings are appropriate for your individual risk profile.
